"The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives."

Where I Got Checked Last Week

Last week, I had to take a couple steps back from projects that I was initially passionate about. It stung, but it was necessary.

After 8+ months of being a full time-entrepreneur, I finally had the clarity to see what’s actually been keeping me and Little Dove afloat. It’s not just my skills (though those matter). It’s not just the impeccable vibes or even the relationships (though both are important). What’s really sustaining my business is one thing: choosing to show up with excellence.

That choice is part of something bigger that surfaced last week- the details (affectionally called, The Deetz). The seemingly small things like going to bed at a decent time or having a home-cooked meal instead of eating out for the third time this week. When those details compound over time, they make a HUGE difference.

I’ve also had to work slower. Slow enough to acknowledge those details and shift what wasn’t working. And honestly? It’s been sensational.

Finally, I was talking to a friend about what a privilege it is to be an entrepreneur because of how curious it forces you to be. There’s so much more room to explore, study, and get really nerdy about what works and what doesn’t. That curiosity isn’t a distraction from the work- it IS the work. It’s also the reason why co-founding something like Royal Authority came so naturally- I was already operating from a place of curiosity.

With all that said, let’s dive into the deets…

Practical Strategies 🤏🏾

1. Excellence as Longevity Insurance: Why This Matters More Than Money Right Now

At this stage in my business, it’s not even about the money. (I know, I know- that sounds wild coming from someone who’s had to ask family for help this year. But hear me out.)

I don’t take on or pursue projects unless I know that I can execute them with excellence. Why? Because cutting corners will not only hinder opportunities but rob me from the chance to get better. Excellence isn’t just about doing good work, it’s about guaranteeing your business longevity.

After working at companies with genuinely great products and others who were literally packaging and selling air, I understand that having a service or product steeped in excellence from day on is the equivalent of buying insurance for your business’s future. It’s the difference between a business that lasts and one that crashes out after the first year.

There’s also the Kingdom perspective here that I can’t ignore. Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” If we’re really working for God, we should be working with EXCELLENCE. Not perfection (that’s a trap), but excellence. Doing our absolute best with what we have right now.

When you work with excellence, you’re not just building a business, you’re building a testimony. You’re showing people what it looks like to steward your gifts well. You’re creating something sustainable that can support you, your family, and the vision God gave you for years to come.

The shift: Excellence isn’t about being impressive, it’s about being sustainable. It’s the difference between a cute moment and a lasting legacy.

Try this: Identify one area in your life or business where you’ve been cutting corners. This week, commit to showing up with excellence in that ONE area. Notice how it changes not just the outcome, but how you feel about your work.

Bonus: Start saying “I work with excellence” more often. Say it to yourself. Say it to potential clients and collaborators. Say it until you believe it so deeply that mediocrity feels foreign.

2. The Power of Compounding Details: How the Mundane Builds the Extraordinary

If God Himself delights in the details of our lives, shouldn’t we?

I’ve always considered myself a big-picture thinker. I even recently took a spiritual gifts test and scored so low in administration that I seriously considered hiring a VA. (Still might, tbvh). But here’s what I’m realizing more and more: big-picture moments don’t happen without the daily details that have compounded over time.

The mundane builds the extraordinary.

Think about it: That keynote speech you crushed? It happened because of months of small daily decisions to study, practice, and show up consistently. That client you landed? They chose you because of the little things - how you responded to their email, the care you put into your discovery call, the excellence in your portfolio that came from years of detailed work.

The things we do over and over again that feel insignificant end up shaping who we become and how successful our projects are. It's almost like habit formation, but deeper. It's about recognizing that every small choice is a brick in the foundation you're building.

I used to think details were for Type A baddies who can make premium Notion templates in their sleep (read: not me). But the truth is, paying attention to details isn’t about being having it all together, it’s about honoring the process and trusting that God sees and delights in the small faithful acts we think nobody notices.

He notices. And eventually, so will everyone else.

The shift: Stop treating small daily decisions as “just getting through the day.” Start seeing them as the compound interest on your future success.

Try this: This week’s challenge is to be more observant. What are the throwaways - the small details you’ve been ignoring- that you could be paying more attention to? Maybe it's how you start your morning. Maybe it's the way you transition between tasks. Maybe it's the 5 minutes you take (or don't take) to review your work before sending it.

Pick ONE small detail and be intentional about it this week. Watch how it compounds.

3. The Joy (and ROI) of Exploring Curiosity

One of the things I’ve been taking for granted as a full-time entrepreneur is how much fun it is to just be curious. To go on side quests just for the heck of it. To try new things even if they’re challenging and literally drop-kick me out of my comfort zone.

For a long time, leaning into curiosity felt irresponsible. Like what I SHOULD be doing is something more “productive” that will move my business along or help me make connections or drive revenue. All the entrepreneur founder-y things.

It’s only this week that I realized: my curiosity and pushing past my comfort levels, showing up and doing the thing consistently, IS the productive thing.

Action = productive.

Acting on your curiosities brings new perspective, and perspective is one of the most powerful things you can have as a creative and founder.

Think about it: People hire you for your unique perspective. The founder who hires you for branding isn't just paying for a logo - they're paying for how YOU see their business differently than they do. The client who books a discovery call wants YOUR take on their content strategy, not a cookie-cutter template.

And where does that perspective come from? Curiosity. Those rabbit holes you go down? They give you fresh angles for content. Those random skills you pick up? They become unexpected value adds for your clients. That weird question you asked that led to a 2-hour research session? That becomes the insight that sets you apart.

Curiosity isn't a distraction from your business, it’s the absolute jet fuel that drives it forward. The more curious you are, the more perspectives you can offer your clients and audience. And in a world where everyone has access to the same tools and templates, your perspective is what makes you irreplaceable.

The shift: Curiosity isn't irresponsible, it's an investment in your creative capital. The more you explore, the more valuable you become.

Try this: Look out for what curiosity you've been avoiding and explore it further. What's something you've always wanted to know more about? Something that lights you up but feels "off-brand" or "unproductive"?

This week, give yourself permission to dive into that rabbit hole. Read the articles. Watch the videos. Ask the questions. Then notice how that new perspective shows up in your work.

Now let’s get moving!

Monday Move 💃🏾

Pop on this playlist of music that got me through last week, take a moment to stretch, and leave with a reminder for the week ahead

Your playlist:

Your at- desk stretch routine:

* Remember to keep breathing deeply throughout!

Neck Rolls (1 minute)

  • Slowly roll your head in a circle - right, back, left, forward. Switch directions halfway through. Release all the tension from staring at screens and worrying about engagement metrics.

Shoulder Blade Squeeze (30 seconds)

  • Sit tall, pull your shoulder blades together like you're trying to hold a pencil between them. Hold for 5 seconds, release. Repeat 6 times. This one's for all the hours hunched over your laptop.

Seated Cat-Cow (1 minute)

  • Sit at the edge of your chair with hands on knees. Inhale and arch your back, looking up. Exhale and round your spine, tucking your chin. Flow between these movements. Let your body remember it's allowed to move, not just produce.

Wrist Circles (30 seconds each direction)

  • Extend your arms forward. Make gentle circles with your wrists - clockwise, then counterclockwise. This is for all the content you've been creating. Your hands deserve some love.

Standing Forward Fold (1 minute)

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart. Slowly fold forward, letting your arms dangle toward the floor. Bend your knees as much as you need. Let gravity do the work. This is what surrender feels like - releasing control and trusting you'll be held.

Stillness Practice (2 minutes)

  • Sit back down. Close your eyes. Place one hand on your heart, one on your belly. Just breathe. When your mind starts racing about what's next on your to-do list, gently bring it back to your breath. Practice being still.

Your Reminder: Excellence isn't about perfection - it's about sustainability and stewardship. The mundane builds the extraordinary when you're faithful with the deetz. And curiosity IS the work. It keeps you fresh, relevant, and genuinely enjoying the journey!

“You know what just dawned on me?” 💭

This week, I watched a TikTok that absolutely wrecked me in the best way.

A little boy had been asking his parents for a puppy for months. Finally, on his birthday, they gave him a beautifully wrapped box. He tore it open to find... a stuffed puppy.

And instead of throwing a fit or showing disappointment, this kid was SO grateful. He hugged that stuffed puppy like it was the real thing. He thanked his parents over and over. He treated that toy like it was exactly what he'd been asking for.

A few moments later, his parents surprised him with a real puppy. And when he saw it, he burst into tears. (Which subsequently made me and the whole comments section burst into tears) Simply because his gratitude was so genuine for what he didn’t ask for that it was so moving to see him get the real thing.

I can't stop thinking about this. What would it look like if we operated with that kind of gratitude when we don't get exactly what we ask for? When the opportunity isn't quite right, when the client says "not yet," when the revenue is lower than we hoped?

What if that gratitude - that genuine appreciation for what we DO have right now - is actually what opens the door for what we've been asking for?

God delights in the details. Maybe part of that is watching how we steward the "stuffed puppy" seasons. How we show up with excellence even when it's not the full manifestation yet. How we pay attention to the small things. How we stay curious and grateful instead of bitter and closed off.

Maybe the real thing is on its way. And maybe our faithfulness with the details right now is preparing us to handle it when it arrives.
